Education Lottery Retailers Recieve Recognition
Paying attention to players’ comments and providing the right ticket mix, plus spreading the news about a big winner are some customer service techniques paying off for retailers in NCEL’s Asheville Region. For increasing sales by 79 percent and 92 percent, two retailers have been named “Stellar Sellers.” Another retailer has been named a “S.T.A.R.” for their diligent promotion of lottery tickets and information.
NCEL retailers that have increased their sales by the highest percentage in the region compared to the previous quarter earn the title of “Stellar Seller.” One location per region earns the title of “S.T.A.R.” (Spectacular Technique Achieving Retailer) based on NCEL sales representative recommendations for a store’s unique sales promotion technique. Jonas Ridge Outfitters, 9041 NC Hwy 181, Jonas Ridge
Jonas Ridge Outfitters increased its sales by 92 percent compared to the previous quarter. In addition to doing more seasonal business, owner Tom Bridges said he displayed a greater variety of scratch-off tickets after his sales rep suggested it to him, and "sales went through the roof."

East Mountain Kwik Mart, 149 E. Mountain St., Rutherfordton
East Mountain Kwik Mart increased its sales by 79 percent compared to the previous quarter. A store representative said that sales were increased by keeping their dispensers full so that when players come in, the store has the games they want to play.

Mr. Pete’s Market VI, 6335 Brevard Rd., Etowah
Mr. Pete’s VI is a “S.T.A.R.” for, among other customer appreciation efforts, posting monthly and yearly how much the store has paid out in prizes. This location also keeps winning numbers posted at all times and they spread the news about winners. For example, a recent $376,000 Carolina Cash 5 winner has been a hot topic at the store and in town. Store representative Dianne Fish summed it up by saying "We just make it fun!"

For increasing sales by 107 percent and 157 percent, two retailers have been named “Stellar Sellers.” Another retailer has been named a “S.T.A.R.” for their special monitor linking players to the latest winning numbers.

Sunshine Mart increased its sales by 157 percent compared to the previous quarter. Tseghe Kahsar told the NCEL that, as new co-owners of the retail location, she and her husband have brought new enthusiasm to lottery ticket sales. She said customers routinely come in first thing when they open to play as a result of their consistent effort to proactively sell.

A&G Express, 2451 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe
A&G Express increased its sales by 107 percent compared to the previous quarter. Akram Al-Koor said that "When people come in, we talk to them about the new scratch-offs," in addition to displaying lottery banners in visible locations.

Skyway Exxon, 114 Skyway Dr., Monroe
Skyway Exxon is a “S.T.A.R.” for taking lottery visibility to a new level by installing a wide-screen monitor above the ticket dispenser. "People see it as soon as they walk in," said Prakunj Patel. "We display the winning numbers from the lottery website at all times."

Gill’s Grocery Store increased its sales by 226 percent. Gill Inam of Gill’s Grocery Store attributes his store’s success to word getting out that the store is a lottery retailer and the store employees’ focus on customer service.

At 67 Gas, Ken Neupane says he and his employees have been more involved in finding out what their lottery customers want as far as tickets and they have been more diligent about providing winner and jackpot information.

Nathans Creek General Store, 4778 US Hwy. 221 North, Jefferson
“I love selling (lottery) tickets and I love making it fun,” said Debbie Pittman, Nathans Creek General Store manager. The store is a “S.T.A.R.” due to Pittman’s enthusiasm and customer appreciation efforts. She says people will travel out of their way to buy their lottery tickets there because she and her co-workers willingly spend time with their customers; teach them how to play new games; and share news about winners.

Newport BP Mini Mart increased its sales by 135 percent. Management at Newport BP Mini Mart attributes their store’s success to several things including increasing their lottery ticket selection; treating all customers with respect; and its “lucky store” status. The location has had several recent big winners.

Food Lion #1368 increased its sales by 78 percent compared to the previous quarter. At Food Lion, managers say they have a goal to keep everybody happy. They strive to keep their instant ticket vending machine loaded with the most popular tickets and highlight any newly released tickets.

Fuel Doc #12 is a “S.T.A.R.” for its enthusiasm and customer appreciation efforts. Fuel Doc has a register dedicated for lottery sales only and all staff who work that register go out of their way to assist customers. They post winning tickets and winning numbers and management says their customers seem to appreciate the special attention.

Rose Gin Bait & Tackle increased its sales by 127 percent. Management at Rose Gin Bait & Tackle attributes their store’s success to keeping tickets in stock that their customers enjoy playing and to recent big winners that helped give their location “lucky store” status.

Food Lion #842 increased its sales by 106 percent compared to the previous quarter. Food Lion #842 is a fairly new lottery retailer so management says it took a while for word to get out players could get their tickets there. They have increased their signage and word of mouth is helping bring new lottery customers in.

Tommy’s Mini Mart, 1832 Cole Mill Rd., Durham
Tommy’s Mini Mart is a “S.T.A.R.” for its enthusiasm and jackpot awareness efforts. The store is reaching a potential customer base that may have only purchased gasoline had they not seen the latest Powerball jackpot advertised on its gas pump message panel. Management also created jackpot signs to go on their front entrance.
