DURHAM MAN CLAIMS $200,000 POWERBALL PRIZE
One number was the difference for a Durham man who carried a Powerball ticket worth $200,000 in his pocket for several days after the Oct. 31 drawing thinking he had won just $7. John Postiglione told NCEL officials that the discovery of the actual size of the Powerball prize came when his wife checked the numbers online. He said he normally plays the same set of randomly-selected numbers, but “accidentally” played the number 41 instead of 42.

Mark Hamlin says he let out a joyous yell after realizing he’d won $688,283 playing “Carolina Cash 5.” The Charlotte man picked his own numbers for the Oct. 29 drawing and matched all five numbers drawn to win the top prize.

NC Education Lottery Commission Votes to Add Mega Millions
Today, the North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) Commission unanimously voted to add another national lottery game for North Carolina players. The NCEL is working toward launching Mega Millions sales on Jan. 31, 2010, along with several other U.S. lotteries.

The highest prize won to-date is $856,998 when a Pitt County man matched all five numbers drawn to win the Nov. 18, 2007 top prize. The second highest top prize was $731,836 and was won on Dec. 14, 2006 by a Brunswick County man. If no one matches all five numbers drawn tonight, the top prize will continue to roll higher!

Using his winnings from a previous Powerball ticket to purchase a ticket for the Oct. 21 Powerball drawing, Michael Radcliff of Fuquay-Varina became the state’s most recent $200,000 Powerball winner. Radcliff bought his winning ticket at Kangaroo Express #3039 on Highway 210 North in Spring Lake.

Lottery Transfers Over $115 Million to Education Fund
Today, the North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) transferred over $115 million to the State Education Lottery Fund. This transfer brings the overall tally of funds that the NCEL has generated for the education fund to over $1.25 billion.
